GDMTB / The BC Trail: Part 18 – Cute bear on the trail

We left our site early and went to the grocery store in town for coffee breakfast and supplies. As we are stopping at basic recreation sites for the next couple of days and will not be passing re supply points I also had a Slush Puppy for breakfast.

On our site we had a family James, Alaina and their little baby Sam. They are also cycling sections of the KVR. We met them on the trail a couple of times today and had our lunch stop at the same Arlington Lake.

We saw some beautiful wildlife life today. We had our first encounter with a bear as we were cycling. We saw the Grizzly Bear and cubs earlier in the trip, but this was on the trail. It was a Black Bear and it was only about four tandem lengths in front of us. We stopped the bike and it turn to look at us. We said ‘hello bear’ and it ran off like a rocket. I did not have time to get a good picture. It was beautiful and we were not worried or intimidated at all. It was a lovely encounter and a memorable moment of life. I did manage to get a picture as it was just about out of sight. If you zoom in you can just about make him out.

The lunch stop provided another swim opportunity and we made sure we took it.

After lunch it was a couple of hour ride to Hydraulic Lake which is where we have set up the tent and there is another chance to get in the water.

After a dip and an inner tube fixing session we sat down with Alaina’s dad who had met them on trail and was camping with them this evening. He will be riding back with them tomorrow. We also got chatting to another cyclist next to us also doing the trail and he is in his 70’s.

People just love being outdoors in this country, there is so much beauty everywhere and do many different activities to do.

We headed down to the lake later in the evening to watch the sun set.

Tomorrow we go over 16 wooden trestle bridges! We are hoping to get to Chute Lake for lunch and then to finish on the same site as James and his family.
