Costa Rica: Pt 7 – On to the coast

Last night we were sat out watching the sunset and Rachael took this image to sum up the moment.

Rachael’s Sunset

We were just packing up when along came Toady to say goodnight.

Good night Toady

We got in our tent and it was like a sauna. We just laid there motionless trying not to generate more heat. Keeping the door wide open helped slightly but we did that in short intervals so as not to attract any bugs that bite, but I did mention this before, I am surprised by the lack of flying bitey things. I have a few bites around by ankles and calf but I think that must be from the ants when we have sat down to rest.

The wind picked up during the night, it would shake the tent for a minute or so, then it would be still and quiet for five minutes then back again shaking the tent. It was not the constant battering that I have normally experienced.

In the morning we packed up early put all the bags on the bike and were just about to push it off when we noticed the rear tyre was flat. A flat is annoying at the best of times, but when you have spent twenty minutes loading it all up, it is really annoying. I summoned my inner Buddha and laid the bike down on its side. I got everything I needed to change or fix the tube. After inspecting the tyre I could not see a reason so I just pumped it up and monitored while our very kind host made us a cafe negro. It did not seem to be going down. So it is a very slow flat or sometimes they just go down from a loose valve. Either way it is still inflated at the moment. If I wake up tomorrow and it is flat then we know it is a slow and I will do the same or fix it.

Even though our host did not want any money for letting us camp we gave him all the money we had on us at that time, which came to about £15.

It was about 0730 when we set off down the gravel road towards Colorado.

One of the river crossings.

We had two river crossings to wade through. The water came to about knee height.

Along the trail we saw another type of mammal that we believe was a White Nosed Coatis.

The second crossing
Getting some shade

We stopped at a shop that took card so we could get some cold fluids. They are warm about ten minutes later so you gotta enjoy them quick then the rest of the time you are drinking them just for necessity.

We got into Colorado and found our cabina. We got the room and went straight to the shower. Once freshened up we went to the ATM to get some cash and then went to a soda for some food. It is very difficult trying to stick to a vegetarian diet when you don’t know what the dishes entail and your Spanish is very poor. But we do know that we are walking distance from where traditional fishermen go out and catch the fish, so we went for that option and it was very nice.

Fish and chips Costa Rican style

We went back to the room to get out of the heat Rachael did some reading, I had a little siesta.

When I woke up we went for a little walk down to the jetty.

Each town has a sign written in the same style with paintings relevant to the area.

The fishermen were just coming back in and having their catches weighed in at a little building. The sun was setting and the views were lovely. There were quite a few Turkey Vultures and Cranes watching and waiting for any cheap pickings.

Whilst there we got talking to a couple of guys. They were very sweet and kind and said that the rest of the journey would be very beautiful. From where we were stood they could point out our route all the way around Colorado Gulf.
