Costa Rica: Pt 11 – Natures Delight

I have titled the post Natures Delight because today we have seen a number of animals and some animals that we have already seen on this trip but acting very differently.

The thunderstorm lasted near enough all night. The lightening and thunder probably stopped in the early hours but the rain did not stop until about five in the morning.

At this point we just thought we might as well get up and get the bike ready.

We had noticed that the large number of Vultures had come back to finish off the remains of the large turtle. A bit later Rachael looked up and said what are they doing. We witnessed the whole group standing stationary with their wings outstretched facing the sun, they stayed like that for about 20-30 minutes. It looked like something from a SciFi movie where they community are getting instructions from a higher being. It was very eerie.

Apparently the vultures do this as they allow their body temperature to cool at night so they use the sun to warm up, also as we had the crazy storm so they needed to dry their feathers. But seeing a whole community do this for so long was just strange.

As we were packing up the two puppies thought it was play time and terrorised our every move, but they are so adorable it was hard to get cross with them.

The accommodation made us breakfast as we were packing the bike, that enabled us to set off really early.

  • Three Cokes
  • One beer
  • Four coffees
  • Two evening meals
  • Two breakfasts

Came to 21000 colones, which is £31 bargain.

Leaving the digs

When we left the beach we had quite a few climbs and on the first we saw about thirty Coatis cross the road in front of us. We thought they were monkeys at first. I did not get a picture of them as we were grinding up the hill and we needed to keep the momentum but to see thirty of these quite big animals cross the road was a treat. If you are wondering what a Coati looks like, see the image below.

Coati

Halfway through we had the opportunity to stop and get the delicious fruit/ice drinks that have been helping us in the heat

These are so simple but so nice
Love them

We got to our accommodation, it is right on the beach front.

Hammock time

Then we got showered and went out to get a late lunch. We found an amazing restaurant, I can’t wait to go back tomorrow for breakfast.

Whist we were sat there a Hummingbird was in the flowers across from our table.

Also today we have also seen a number of the striking squirrels, toads, very large iguanas and a tiny tiny frog.

BUT…. Just as I have been Sat in my hammock writing this episode we have seen parrots. Right in the tree next to us. About six were being disrupted by another bird and would take to the sky. It is incredible how much their colours stand out. They are very large birds too. It was such a beautiful thing to see them in their natural habitat, just flying around in the wild….. Amazing day.

Tomorrow we will be right at the bottom corner before we make our way up the Pacific Coast

Tomorrow we get to Cabuya 🙂 👍🏽
